Angry Tax-us City

Within the last year hotels in the metro Kansas City area, Missouri as well as Kansas have not only raised room tax rate but also added a per night charge.

In Kansas, the tax is now a whopping 17.85%, plus a daily tax of $3.13. So your $65/night stay at the Airport Sleep Inn is now $80.

Has anyone ever seen a higher tax rate in the U.S? I haven't.

It's hard to compare, because the flat daily tax is a lower percentage the higher your room rate is, and a higher percentage the lower your room rate is.

Also, it's hard to get data nationally that's very up-to-date.

And it's hard to find tables nationally that mention any flat daily tax even when it exists.

Las Vegas was 18% and St Louis was 17.93% in 2015 according to this site:
https://hotelnewsresource.com/pdf16/HVS082916.pdf
But of course tax rate in percentage doesn't tell the whole story either. An 18% tax on a hotel in midtown Manhattan that goes for $300+ is way worse in actual cost to the wallet than an 18% tax on a $65 Sleep Inn near MCI. And if only you could get a $65 Sleep Inn near JFK...

Two or so years ago Georgia instituted a $5.00 per night hotel fee to improve transportation. This is on top of all the other wonderful taxes. A $49 stay last week turned into nearly $62. Unfortunately, I spend a lot of time in GA.

So NYC to compare is cheap on the tax at 14.75% + 1.50 a day but rates are high? Haha
NYC Hotel Room Occupancy Tax Rate 5.875%
NY State Sales Tax 4%
NY City Sales Tax 4.875%
New York State Hotel Unit Fee $1.50 a day.

I stayed in KC 2 nights ago. They have had a daily tax ( called an arena fee ) as long as I can remember. It is not $3.13, but $1.50 as it has always been.

Good find on Las Vegas. Chicago, too, is competitively high.

Hotels are not raising taxes, it is state and local jurisdictions. All the hotel does is collect the tax and pay it over.

Many jurisdictions see it as an easy way to generate tax revenue without raising taxes on locals (who vote).

People are also likely not price sensitive as to tax. If you need to stay overnight at a given location, the taxes are what they are set at.
