Hertz #1 Club versus Hertz Gold Club?

So what's the difference between Hertz #1 Club (which I'm apparently signed up for) and the Gold Club (which I'm apparently not)?

Is Gold just an elite level of Hertz Club membership? Do you get anything if you're just in the plain old #1 Club? (By 'anything', I mostly mean quicker check-in.)

Plenty. (at airports with Club #1 Gold service) While Club #1 will have your relevant creidt card and driver's license info on file (along with car preferences), you'll still have to wait at the counter (either at the airport or at the rental cal facility) to go through the hoops of getting your keys, verifiying info, etc. With Club #1 Gold, it's get on the bus, show your card to the driver (if it's a Hertz courtesy bus as opposed to say the rental car shuttle at DCA), and you'll get dropped off at the special Club #1 Gold area where your name is on the board along with where they've put your car. You just walk over to the car, trunk is open, drop your stuff off, and go (keys in the ignition). The only other stop is the exit gate and they just check your license and the paperwork (which is hanging from the rear view mirror when you get in) and you're off.

Now at airports without Club #1 Gold service, you do have to stop at the counter - but the paperwork is done - and I think all I've had to do is show 'em the license and go.

Now, here's the rub. You can get complimentary Club #1 Gold through Amex Platinum, or the AMA or ABA (if you're a member)(and probably through other organizations or even through elite FF programs). Otherwise, it costs $50 a year (IIRC).

For me it's been worth it as it cuts a lot of time off for me after I've got my bags and am ready to roll. Actually, on a recent trip where I was Club #1 Gold and a friend was Club #1, it took him about 20-25 more minutes to get processed for his car and to get his car. I just walked over to the Hertz area (at PIT) found my car and it's off to the races (as it were).

So much for the "commercial." Good luck - if you do want it - get it for free if at all possible - probably better value that way.

Thanks, CLTFlyer! I only rent cars about once a month, so $50 isn't worth it for me, and I haven't noticed anything where I can comp it free. Ah well.

If you join the regular #1 club (you can do this for free; just call Hertz), you get comped to #1G next year after four rentals this year.

I called this month and told them that I was having a problem - my wife was a member, I wasn't and I wanted to pick up the car. They asked about memberships and I was able to waive the fee because I was a One Pass member (not elite - my wife is the traveller). Got the docs this week. I think they will do their best to find a way to avoid the fee. GOOD LUCK

I think that Gold is one of the best travel decisions I have ever made...takes away so many hassles, lines, inefficient staff, etc. that I'm never in the mood for after flying.

I would never go back, Hertz has me as a customer for life...Now if I could only qualify for Platinum service, that is really sweet.

It is a very good service, and as long as you keep renting from them, you won't have to pay a fee. Surely works for me.

Now, just a question: What is Platinum service? I have not heard of it. Know the 5-Star and President's Level, but Platinum service is a new one to me.

Just curious and asking, thanks...

Platinum is VVip service that is mostly given to celebrity/high profile business people. A friend of mine was traveling with Andre Agassi once and he is a member, basically a Hertz person meets him at the curb outside bagage claim with his car and he simply drives away. same thing with departures, someone takes the car at the curb, no shuttles ever! They don't talk about this service at all and no way to qualify for it as far as I know...they approach you if you qualify.

Leisuremiles: The basic advantages of Platinum are that Hertz open an account for you, which saves on paperwork. In addition:

- guaranteed vehicle availability
- At airports you are met at the terminal by the Hertz Station manager and escorted to the car
- Guaranteed automatic vehicle upgrade
- Preferential rates.
- Platinum Service Reservation hotline in most major countries.

The invitation letter each year states:

"I am pleased to welcome you as an individually selected member of Hertz Platinum Service.

Hertz Platinum Service has been introduced to provide the highest level of VIP service to a very select group of people, small by definition, who are recognised as leaders in their chosen fields. Current members include politicians, captains of industry and leading personalities.

I am offering you this service for a simple, and I believe, sound business reason. Being able to count you as a regular Hertz customer would say a great deal about our company. You are used to expecting excellence, and this is precisely what Hertz Platinum Services offer.

In return for your highly valued business, I am offering you a service which recognises your status and provides outstanding benefits you would find difficult to match elsewhere".

I have been Platinum for some time, and have to say the service really is excellent.

In my 2002 Continental Elite package I just recieved an offer to waive membership fees in Hertz #1 Club Gold so I "dug" up this thread as I researched.

It's free, and I usually rent Hertz, so I guess I'll go for it.

I believe that they only charge US people. If you have an address you can use outside the US, it is easy to get #1 Gold for free.

You can frequently get Hertz Gold free just by asking nicely (doesn't hurt to write a nice letter). If this does not work, apply for the Marriott Visa (free first year) and they will give you a code for a free membership. I'd pass it on, but I lost mine.
